Question Going to write a tutorial, but is 1 needed?

I'm seen quite a bit of posts requesting image manipulation, heck I've even gotten private messages on the subject. So it got me thinking, should I create a tutorial for the basics of creating wallpapers and icons?

I will not use photoshop in this tutorial, I do not advocate piracy, and I find it hard to believe so many people casually have registered copies. Instead, I will be using GIMP for this proposed tutorial, it can open PSD files which are native to photoshop, it's got builds for every OS type, and best of all its OPEN SOURCE, AKA FREE!

Proposed Topics
1- Resizing Images for Wallpapers
2- Creating Custom Icons
3- Changing the colors of existing images
4- Turning Color images to Black and White
5- Removing objects from photos
6- Clipping and Masking
7- Fake Glass and Shadows

These are all very simple tutorials, with their degree of difficulty growing as you progress down the list.

I've got some free time and I wouldn't mind having a Stickied post under my belt

So anyone interested?

I'd say don't write your own. There are so many good write ups on the interwebz already for all of these techiques (excluding making icons since its more a specific thing). Bu go and find other guides and show others where they might learn the ways.

This is specific to the iphone however, for the purpose of skinning.

Many of the existing tutorials online don't immediately tell you how to make an icon for your springboard, or resize your image for your wallpaper. Rather, new users take a trip down a sea of endless information not sure of what the should even be looking for.

This is the purpose of the tutorial here, it's micro content for a specific purpose: to expedite the time lost searching elsewhere.

I say go for it. I'd be grateful for a write up, and on a forum like this, I think it'd be useful for the truly, truly newbies.

I've got some of it done already, but I'm trying to find the best approach for deliver, and how easy it is to understand.

The problem I am encountering is that I must explain every tool I use as if it's the reader's first time. What this ends up becoming is a tutorial on the toolset, which isn't what I'm after.

I'll have to find the line too much text, and just enough to make things clear.

I think I may make this a video tutorial the more I think about it. It's a lot easier to show people what to do and just say what I'm doing as I'm doing it instead of having a numbered list and matching screenshots.

We'll see how it turns out, if I can't get the quality to look at least highschool-AV-Club-Quality then I'll stick with a text tutorial, heh.

It's still in progress, I've got two things in mind to start, buttons and backgrounds. Both will use templates that I've premade, all thats needed is for the reader to drop in their own images.

Hopefully I'll have this done later in the week.
