Default sending photos through SMS

I had read in the David Pogue iPhone book that there was a way to get around the lack of MMS support on the iPhone. It said you could swend photos by emailing a photo to a certain address (varies with the recipient carrier). For example, you would send the photo to 2155551212@mms.att.net. I tried it with someone who had an iphone (I sent it from one using that method to someone who has one)and they received some sort of blank text message in SMS,, but not the photo. deos anypne know if this is a valid method? Was it possibly negated with the 1.1.1 update?
