Kind of coming out of the blue, isn't it? I didn't think 3.0 would be announced until WWDC, in conjunction with an iPhone refresh.

Any links to sites with more information?

I don't believe there is any additional info. It's the real deal. Apple will be using the March 17th event to talk 3.0.

Something competitive is brewing. Wonder if Apple is being pre-emptive in light of new Palm devices?

Now that it's official, I'm starting to think massive overhaul of the OS this time around. I'm guessing true multithreading and sandboxing as has been predicted. And I'm guessing all iPhones will be able to run it, but the new hardware coming out this summer will run it a lot better. That will be the incentive to upgrade.

It's quite exciting to think of what kind of CPU/memory they might put in the next iPhone to make this new OS really shine.

I think the near-perfect Trifecta would be: OS 3.0 includes background apps, copy&paste, better ways to manage apps / home screens, video recording, and permission for devs to come up with app launchers; plus big hardware improvements for a new model (CPU, battery life, RAM etc), and AT&T comes out with the rumored trade-in program so that it becomes a little more possible to think about the new model ...
