that was my exact first thought. try to steal some of Palm's thunder and try to retain the iPhone customers who are considering the Pre due to the iPhones current shortcomings. If I get MMS, Copy/Paste, A2DP, and some tweaks to the email app I would be completely set with the iPhone and possibly break away from my BlackBerry.

It's interesting to see which way they go.
I think they will go more with average consumer - not on operating system.

Consumer stuff is more likely- Video recording, Copy & Paste, Picture texting.

They don't want people being jealous of there friends.

The new operating system is more likely for the next phone generation and maybe netbook.

By "Which way" I meant for the programmers and tech folks (all of you) or the average joe who wouldn't notice a new operating system.

well there ARE going to be significant changes to the operating system. That's what the designation 3.0 is for. If they were just adding a couple of things like video recording and/or MMS, it would only be called 2.3, and additionally would NOT necessitate a press conference (or whatever they're calling it) and completely new SDK.

keep in mind, when apple refreshed the iMacs, Mac Minis, and Mac Pros only a couple of weeks ago, they just sent out an email. But for THIS announcement they have something special planned.

The 2.0 update will be the new operating system. There's really not a difference between the operating system and the phone's software - every time there's a software update, you're essentially getting a new OS. The only reason we're using the term Operating System is because of the possibility of Apple entirely rewriting it.

I agree 100% Aggie. Just not too much with the last part.

I really hope 3.0 will have the things you mentioned and more. If it does, I don't think I'd completely part with my BlackBerry(s). Maybe if they get something going like RIM has with push email for any account and also a completely lag free OS. That'll be the day the BlackBerry goes bye-bye.

Id love an overhaul on the OS, It is scary though because I do like the OS now but I really wanna see what they come up with because Apple always takes steps forward with almost everything they put out I have noticed.
I keep thinking about WinMo and so I want this update to make sure I made the right choice with my iPhone 3G

I'm setting my expectations low. I think it'll be email upgrades, background apps, and better organization of icons. Oh - and bug/security fixes. We'll find out soon enough though.
