Default Forwarding email to @me.com but keeping other accounts for manual fetching?

I thought this would be a really simple issue to solve, but I can't seem to figure it out. I have two Gmail accounts and just signed up for a MobileMe account. I forward all my Gmail to my @me.com account and use smtp.gmail.com as my outgoing server for my @me.com address so I don't ever have to reveal my @me.com address. However, I still want the Gmail accounts on my iPhone so that I can use them to search my old emails on the server via IMAP and have them as options for sending email on the phone.

However, I don't want them wasting my battery life by checking email with any frequency (since all those emails will be pushed to my @me.com address anyway). So, I set my Gmail accounts to fetch mail manually on the phone. What I want is for those accounts to only fetch mail when I open the Mail application, go into one of the Gmail accounts and click on the refresh arrow in the lower-left corner. What I find happening is that they seem to check for mail whenever I open the Mail application at all. How do I make it so my Gmail accounts only check for mail when I really force them to and not just whenever I open Mail?

Thanks!

I don't think there is a way to do exactly what you're talking about but my setup works the same way. Only possible difference is that in my gmail settings, I chose to "archive gmail's copy" in the section I entered the forward address (the MobileMe one). This way the email automatically forwards to mobile me and the saves a copy in "all mail" On gmail which is a folder that doesn't sync unless you click on it unlike gmail's inbox which automatically syncs when you open the mail app. This way you can get your gmail "pushed through MobileMe and delete whatever you don't want and still access your archived messages on your iPhone onlywhen you want and you won't have the duplicates automatically in MobileMe and gmail. Gmail will never say new messages unless you a) tap the "all mail" folder or b)send a message to yourself (from gmail to same gmail account). Hope this helps!!

It's a bit of a pain, but you could always turn them off before opening up mail (if you don't want them to fetch the mail) and then turn them back on when you close mail. It's a PITA but it's the only way I know of to get what you want.
