Default Do YOU think Apple will abandon 1st gen phone?

I was just wondering what everyones thoughts are concerning the impending release of iPhone2. Will it mean that iphone 1 updates will stop? I mean if you were apple/Steve why would you keep updating/improving the iphone1 when what you really want is for people to buy the "new and improved" iPhone 2?

I, for 1, would feel betrayed if they (apple) did not keep improving the, software addressable, features of iPhone1.

iPhone 2 will run the same software. There may be software titles that are G2-specific, but otherwise I fully expect any software updates to the G2 iPhone to be available for the G1.

yea i agree with psylichon, i dont think apple would completely leave the people who bought the first phone out in the dust with no new updates, i think the updates will go in sync with both the new and old iphone but im sure they might make "special" updates for each phone as needed.

Naturally, they will continue updates for the V1.

they will support it for a while....but that is the question of the day...how long will they...? the new 3G iphone is the same as the current except for the the 3g chip and gps......so it will be a while till they do...probably until the revamp the iphone internal hardware.....cause i dont think they can do anything to improve the outside...its perfect the way it is...

I could see V3 using faster hardware with more features that will eventually make software more hardware-specific. But with regards to the OS, I think it will be backwards-compatible for as long as they can keep it up (so your apps don't go obsolete ovenright). So if a new piece of iPhone software doesn't absolutely need new hardware on a V2 or V3 phone, I could see us being able to install it on V1 for quite some time to come...

yeah i think that the only thing that will limit the iPhone is its life expectency. Like will they continue to function properly after all that time. I mean quite a few have already been repaired or replaced under warranty, but my warranty is up so if something goes wrong, then i'd have to get the v2. so i figure they will eventually fizzle out.

One of the supposed memo's sent to ATT managers said something along the lines of the $20 data plan would remain in place until further notice. IF we assume the memo to have creditability, this indicates that the $20 plan will be deleted at some point. I can see Apple stopping updates at some point down the road. Hopefully not until at least the third generation iphone.
