Eventually, updates may stop for the original iPhone, but not for now. Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) came out after Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) came out. However, the Panther OS is, as far as I know, no longer updated.

I know this is a night & day difference but do you remember how Microsoft turned its back on Windows ME? lol my 5 month marriage last longer than the Millennium Edition.
anyway, apple still updates old ipods, and the software that iphone1 and iphone2 run on are similar enough that updates will continue long enough. I don't think there's anything to worry about here.
I think we can safely assume updates until at least this time next year. Apple's internal accounting for v1 included 2 years on the books. After that, who knows?
yea i do think that they will eventually kill the iphone 1 and everyone will have the iphone 2. but i think that even thought that will in fact happen that they still need to keep the iphone 1 up to date.
