I'm hoping we don't go to all this trouble to jailbreak on 3.0, and then 3.0.1 comes out with MMS and a baseband upgrade. What a nightmare that'd be! :P It better just be a carrier update.

To jailbreak in the future, Apple may give you a permanent ID or something like that and it will be sent to Apple every time you restore, which is needed to jailbreak. Using this process, you are making a new ID/code so that in the future you can replace it on your phone and generate as many codes as you want to get past Apple.

That's how I understand it.

I just did it.

Just to let everyone know you don't actually need to restore your phone after putting it into recovery mode. Once it's in recovery mode, you can turn it off and then back on and your phone is back to normal. It was very easy took less than 5 minutes.

From the Dev team's latest entry on their blog
If you already have a 3GS phone and have already done a full USB dump or captured your img3’s signed with your ECID, then you’re in great shape. You will always be able to jailbreak. But many people who plan on getting a 3GS do not yet have one.
That seems like reason enough to do it if you are planning on jailbreaking.
