I personally use QuickPwn. It's take about 10-15 minutes. It's a very quick process.

Do I have to restore from one of those .ipsw files or whatever they're called? Or can I just download QuickPwn, plug in my iPhone and go? I don't want to unlock, just jailbreak.

Thank you.

Don't use the pwnage tool. Just download quickpwn, plug in the iPhone, and go.

If you go into "Settings > General > About", there should be a line that says, "Version". (at least it does on my iPhone 3G)

You're welcome.

Try these instructions, skip the "Mac" section and go to the "Freeing your iPhone or iPod touch (all users)" section.
