Question Unlocking 3G iPhones!!

Will the existing softwares (ZiPhone, Pwnage) be able to unlock/crack the new 3G version that apple is launching? What about firmware version 2.0?

There is a good discussion on this in the 3g forums. Go here and read this. There is some information on the way that AT&T is going to do the activations now and how that may or may not affect unlocking in the future.

Yup At&t is backing themselves up Unless ...................................... ................... ......... .......... ....................... ................................. ....................... ............ ...... .. ... ............. .. ......... ........ ....... ... ....
You know someone who has the At&t and pay them to get you the iPhone 3G under their current contract. Have them change back to their old phone and have them take back their old plan and after 30 days and you have yourself a 3G iPhone without contract.

Wouldn't they still charge you the termination fee for not using the iPhone's plan?

The person wouldn't be canceling their contract but just changing their plan. I currently have At&t and i changed my plan a couple of times. just have the person go back to their original plan and use their old phone and you keep the 3G iPhone after 30 days.

But you have to return the iPhone, or get dinged with the ETF after 30 days.

So you do have a new iPhone, but would have paid almost $400 for it.

So what is the point of that? So you can use the new iPhone 3G on T-Mobile with EDGE only? Just buy a V.1 iPhone and unlock it and use it on T-Mobile. iPhone 3G will not work on T-Mobile USA's 3G network. Not to mention that your friend buying you the iPhone on their plan (if it was as easy as you say it is) would lose their upgrade for another year or so and have to resign a new contract for you. So maybe you'd also have to pay him/her for that as well.

I travel abroad at least 3 times a year, and I would like to unlock so that I can put local SIMs in my phone. Other than that, a T-mobile person wanting GPS would be the only other reason to unlock a 3G iPhone I think.

The way I see it, I would need about $800 to make it worth my while to pick up a 3G iPhone for someone. For $800, the buyer is better off just ending his current contract and switching to AT&T. At least then he could still get Visual Voicemail.
