Default Recovery Mode?

I jailbroke my iPhone today for the first time. After downloading lots of apps and stuff I plugged it back into the charger and got a message from iTunes saying that the phone was in "recovery" mode and I must restore it for it to work.

I'm just wondering, is this normal? Am I normally not allowed to sync my phone while its jailbroken? Is there anything I should avoid to prevent possible bricking?

Download iBrickr if on Windows or Independence if on OSX and just run it. It should put you at the "slide to unlock" screen.
