Newbie question! Jailbreak vs. Unlock?
I searched and searched, but couldnt find the answer I wanted. I plan on getting a Iphone this weekend. My question is, whats the difference between jailbreak and unlocked?

Jailbreaking allows you to install 3rd party applications, customize graphics, sounds, etc. Unlocking allows you to use the phone on networks other than AT&T.

Okay, confused a little. I'm buying the phone from AT&T, plan on using it on that network...the idea of 3rd party apps and customs ring tones is pretty much what Im after. Is this possible with a new out of the box phone? Do I need software to jailbreak a phone?

hi,
im just wandering if u could tell the difference between a jailbreak-ed iphone and an officially unlocked iphone? is there a way to jailbreak the iphone, but not install other apps on it (eg. installer, cydia, etc.) ? jailbreaking with winpwn 2.xxx thx |

a jaibraked iphone means that you can install unoficial applications on your phone, and a unlocked iphone means that you can use a carrier that does not work with apple, and yes you can jailbrake your phone and not installing anything but there is no point in doing that
but i think you have to be jailbroken now in order to unlock, i don`t know for sure, i`m still on 1.1.4 and won`t update until a more stable version of the fw
