iTunes Version 7.6.1.9
how to make custom ring tones for your iphone.
i've done this over 40 times, yes i have that many ring tones.
Follow This Step By Step And You Should Have No Problem At All.
1. Select song you want to make into a ring tone,
your going to cut this in iTunes.
2. click the song, high lighting it, it should be blue now.
then left click on your mouse, the click "get info"
3. click the "options tab" -> set the start/stop time
(remember to keep the total time under 30 seconds"->click "Ok"
4. Now left click again on your mouse, this time go down about
six columns under the "get info" and click "convert selection to ACC"
THIS IS WHERE EVERYONE MESSES UP, SO PAY ATTENTION!
5. the 30 second clip you just picked and converted to ACC format will appear as if its still the whole song, don't think it didn't work, it did!
it appears its the same but -- its not. go to your library, click the music column and then in the right hand side of iTunes click your search column
search the song you cut and made into acc format by typing it in the search colum it will appear and look at the time, it will come up with the full song and another one that says 30 seconds under the time.
6. from here drag the 30 second clip (from itunes) into your ringtone folder (don't confuse this with an iTunes playlist)
7. single click the file in it's new location, click again, now change the ending from .m4a to .m4r
-you'll be asked to use .m4r or .m4a, obviously go with the former
8. go back into iTunes and delete the 30 second clip. When iTunes asks, delete it to the trash (important)
9. double click the newly created .m4r file in the ringtone folder, it should open in the ringtones playlist in iTunes.
10. connect iPhone and sync, enjoy.
-remember to uncheck the start and stop times of the original mp3
I give up. I tried this, got to #9 and when I get to step #10, it won't sync. Under devices, where it has the summary tab for my iphone, under ringtones, I am able to see the ringtone that I created. I hit apply and then sync, the phone start syncing, and when I check my phone, the ringtone is not there.
Now, if I move the ringtone to the "ringtone" icon (in itunes under devices) thats where it starts creating the same ringtone over and over, even if they are different named ringtones that I created.
Thanks so much for the info. I did it and it worked.

Using only itunes!!! Follow my easy instructions, btw this is for pc users only!
You may want to have this page open while your creating your own...
1. Open control panel on windows, (usually its under the start menu)
2. Switch to classic view and select folder options
3. Click the view tab and uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types."
4. Opening iTunes, select the song you would like to use, right click/get info and select the options tab to find the start/end times
5. Change the start and end times to make a 30 second portion of the song. And then play the song to make sure that's the portion you want for a ringtone.
6. Right click on the song and convert to AAC
7. Drag the new 30 sec long song to your desktop (I used the ringtone folder in iTunes instead because I didn't want to clutter my desktop)and rename .m4a to .m4r (if you use the desktop like iRobert suggested it would have to stay there in order to be located, thats why I changed it to the ringtones folder. I would suggest doing it this way, so you can keep your iTunes in order.)
8. Make sure you delete the 30 second song out of your music library... B4 continuing
9. Doubleclick the new .m4r file on ur desktop 100% free ringtone! Now sync your phone...
10. Go back to the original song, right click, get info, change the song length back to it original length. If you dont do this your song will only be 30 seconds long next time you listen to it.
This has only been tested by me, on itunes 7.6 and 1.1.3 software.
That was pretty much pasted, but I have tried this as well and it works. Enjoy.......you deserve it!!!

Listen I tried doing it this way and when I put more than 1 r/t on the phone they all had the same name, any clues?
for some reason i cant get them from the ringtones section to my iphone correctly. heres an example of what is happening:
i have the ringtones "Boom Snap Clap Snap" and "GLADOS im not talking to you" in my ringtones section of my itunes.
i drag them over to my iphone.
then in my ringtones section, theres 2 of the same ringtone, but not one of the other. like
Custom
Boom snap clap snap
Boom snap clap snap
how do i fix this? anyone have any ideas?
also for some reason other ones i copy will work fine and not act like the same, and also under my ringtones section of my iphone, everything is correct.
Im having this exact same problem ive tried everything deleted all my old ringtones that previously work does it have something to do with the last iphone software update thats when i started getting these problems
I posted this question in another thread, but no one replied.
I created different ringtones (10 of them) and I am able to see them in iTunes and also in my iPhone ringtone folder. But when I try to select a ringtone in my phone, one of the ringtones is copied 10 times with the same name.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong when creating the ringtones?
Well I'm glad I'm not the only one having problems doing this, I thought I was loosing my mind.If your doing everything the way your told, like I was, it's not us. Still Haven't found how to fix this. Maybe some kind soul on EiC can help.

There may have been an iTunes upgrade that corrected the back door. I cannot check right now as I am not at a computer. So I will research this if nobody else answers it before I get back to a computer!

I spent over an hour on the phone with apple care on this issue.(as I posted earlier in a similar thread) I was told it was a firmware issue and given a new phone. I since have had no problem. The Original phone was 1.1.2 OTB and upgraded to 1.1.3 and 1.1.4. The second phone was 1.1.4 OTB, so im not sure if upgrading v. OTB had anything to do with it. This all occurred on my wife phone. My phone was 1.1.3 OTB and ive had no such issue.
