I don't know how accessible the hardware that you'd need to change to get 3G is, but buying something for the phone to substitute for the edge would be the only possible option i see and i don't even know if they will do that. I doubt they can just implement 3G through a firmware update. Like one of the above posters, that involves a hardware change.
It's impossible to make the existing one 3G. It would need a new power amplifier (responsible for amplifying the RF signal right before it leaves the phone), transceiver (receive module for downconverting the incoming RF and upconverting the outgoing RF), and baseband (modulator/demodulator and a lot of DSP).
Sorry guys, but you're gonna have to wait at least a few more months for the 3G model.
