it's because you're not doing it right.
download the file and save it as .ipsw..

i found this on a different forum and tested it out. worked perfectly for my iphone 3g.

error six is usually a USB problem. Make sure you are not using a hub. Connect it directly to your of and use the cable the phone came with.

I upgraded and everything went well. However it only shows my phone to have a capacity of 2.96 gigs?! I've got a 4 gig and now I can't fit my music on it. Has anyone else encountered this? I want it to recognize all my free space

ok ok.

THIS IS ONLY FOR iPhone 3G!!! ... V1 will not work, hence why you tried it 5 times and had no luck. I have done this method 3 times all on iPhone 3g's (both white & black, 8gb and 16gb) and have not had one problem.

I too lost some of my apps when i jailbroke, but you can easily re-install from the AppStore.

I just jailbroke my 3G a few mins ago. I didn't lose any of my apps. It removed them when i restored, and got an error saying my puter wasn't authorized. So i just authorized it, and all my apps were restored.

When i go to get the files it takes me to a page that shows:

Parent Directory -
iPhone 3G Jailbreak...> 21-Jul-2008 16:57 19K
iPhone.3G.Jailbreak.nzb 21-Jul-2008 16:57 129K

They do not appear to be x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw and iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw.

Someone please clarify
THanks
It's a torrent you have to download that has the two files. Now it looks like they have it for both mac and win.
