Default 3Gs jailbreak questions

hi peoples! i'm new to the foum, and to iphone. i got an iphone 3gs, and it's got the 3.1.2 upgrade. i am in new zealand, on the vodafone network. will the new jailbreak work for me? if it does, i have a few questions:

1. can i keep all my contacts, calendars, apps, etc? or does the phone get restored to factory when you jailbreak?

2. how hard is it? i'm not a computer genius, but i'm not useless either.

3. is it safe? i mean, it won't make my iphone crap out, is it?

4. how easy is it to restore phone to brand-spanking, out of the box new?

sorry if these questions have been answered before, but i've been browsing through, and it kinda seems complicated, with all the firmwares and things...

thanks everybody!!

Alot of people (myself included) feel it is best to restore to factory before you jailbreak, but it isn't necessary. Some problems can arise during the jailbreak process if there are lots of third party apps on the phone. Make sure you have a current back up before you attempt to jailbreak, so if something does go wrong...you can restore from back up and have minimal loss of data.

blackra1n is a VERY simple jailbreak, assuming it works for you. All you do is connect your device and run the program.

3. is it safe? i mean, it won't make my iphone crap out, is it?
I have been jailbreaking sine I bought my first iPhone, I have not had any problems with the jailbreak. I would say it is safe, where people run into issues is the third party apps, some are not compatible with others and they have conflict issues. Then instead of removing the apps to see which one was the culprit, they blame the jailbreak.

4. how easy is it to restore phone to brand-spanking, out of the box new?
Connect your phone to iTune and click the restore button, then once done...set up as a new phone.

1. I just jailbroke yesterday without doing any kind of factory restore, even restored from a backup once it as jailbroken and everything is working great on my phone. I have about 20 third party apps installed.

2. It's about 6 clicks of with the new pwnage tool (3.1.4).

3. These days jailbreaking is really safe. It's the unlocking part that can be tricky (but only when you upgrade the phone).

As to the second question, yes after you jailbreak you can still use iTunes to manage your digital library (music, TV Shows, movies, Podcasts, rtc).
