I agree that the connection to iTunes so you can buy the song is a brilliant marketing connection. I know that the service is available elsewhere for a fee, but I would think that Apple would be smart to negotiate a one-time fee, carry the cost themselves, and continue to reap the benefits.
I was kinda hoping that "free for now" meant that early d/l'ers would get it free, act as the tool for publicity, and then the cost burden could be upon those who get on the wagon late. Probably not the likely scenario though.
