I do notice, however, that the apps that appear in the Top 10 because of the free downloads eventually get taken out. I suppose someone managing the iTunes Store takes out the free downloads and adjusts for paid downloads. Still, the time it is the #1 paid app could make the devs quite a bit of money. It is somewhat smarmy, but a good way to create an instant userbase for their app.
I suppose the real "up and up" way to do it is to offer a free "lite" version and a paid version at the same time.
