    SD Card Reader

I just ran across this SD card reader for the video iPod. If this works for the iPhone, it will be a great way to transfer pictures from your stand alone camera (for emailing). It is a little pricey though.

If it is not compatible, I am sure an iPhone version will be developed eventually.

There's also this guy for less than half the price. (Who'd have ever thought I'd say that about an Apple product?) You'd also be able to use a camera with CF, Mem stick, XD, etc.

It's a good bet (but no certainty) it'll be iPhone-compatible.

Why didn't Apple add the card reader?

Good question. In my mind, it is the question. A microSD slot takes up very little space, uses zero battery when idle, and increases the iPhone's capacity from 4/8GB to unlimited.

    another possibility...

apple could be planning a storage upgrade in the near future. as a avid mac user i know apple will release a much better version shortly after you run out and grab one. flash media technology is advancing. it's getting smaller and cheaper... for example:

my problem the ipod was the hdd. i just don't think a hard drive should be spinning and bouncing in your pocket. in my experience the drive usually crashes and eventually has to be replaced.

though i'd love a removable media port... i think apple is headed in the right direction.

the problem with flash media is that it can only be flashed so many times and that is way less than the amount of times you can write to a hdd without failure.

This is true, but not really a big deal. I believe the iPhone uses Nand Flash (same as the iPod Nano). If so, it has a life expectancy of about 1 million cycles. I doubt the flash is going to fail before some other component does. No matter how you slice it though, the benefits of flash far out weigh the benefits of HD in a mobile device.
