Remote & dock, just charging & audio, what is taking so long?

OK, I'm a recent iPhone convert. Before the 3Gs I was sporting a Moto phone and a Zune 30 for my DAP. I have to say I'm happier with the iPhone than anticipated. I'm now back to carrying just one device and back to having a PDA which I had given up long ago because it was just too much to carry.

That said, I'm pretty disappointed in the dock w/remote offerings from Apple. The Universal dock gets trashed even by fanboys. All I want is a simple dock with a remote and audio out so I can hook up some external speakers at work. This was a no brainer with the Zune (they have a great cheap dock and remote).

Now I know the simple answer is to eschew this plan and buy a speaker dock, but I'd rather not. I have some good powered speakers to use. I'd rather not spend the money on a full blown speaker dock when the speakers I have are much better than most of the speakers docks out there.

The closet thing I've found is the Dexim AV dock, but it's overkill for this use, I don't need AV just A! The other route is to get the Universal dock (overpriced) and the new IR remote from Apple.

Any other options?
