Lightbulb Powermat

whats the point of this someone please tell me.

powermat

so its wireless charging for things, only, you have to plug the mat into the wall, thats $99.00 then you have to buy a $40.00 adapter for my iPhone, plug the iPhone into the little dock thingy and set it on the mat that's plugged into the wall? isn't that the same thing as plugging it into the wall with the $5.00 cable it came with?

am i missing something here?

No you're not missing anything except the cable costs around $19.

It's kind of neat how it works nut I really don't see the point. It's not like you can walk around your house and talk on your phone while it charges. You still have to keep your phone on the mat. Seems the same as plugging your phone in to charge it.

Not if you know where to shop.

iPhone Cable on Monoprice.com

Sure, they're not 1st party, but for $1.53 each, you can buy several of them. I bought enough that I just have a cable permanently plugged into every computer I use and one in every car I drive.

The mat comes with a pad that you have to plug into various objects to charge, so a I agree that pad is somewhat pointless. However, there is practical application here. Right now, you have to buy a case/add-on to what you want to charge if you don't want to use the pad (so really you have to), and that lets you drop your item onto the pad to charge.

Current application is not great but it is convenient and very cool technology. I have my BB and iPhone sitting on it charging right now.

Whats more exciting is the potential application for the PowerMat. Imagine if something is sold that can hook under your counters/tables/walls and creates spots on the table where you drop or hang your electronics. Imagine too that the electronics already come "PowerMat Capable" so no additional case or add on is needed. Anyways, it is still a cool piece of technology now with some practicality, but the potential is huge.

Thread already started BTW:

Ya I think when the technology improves there will be some very cool and practical applications for it.

Am I missing something here? The only thing I saw free on that link is the shipping. It still is priced at $145- which is grossly overpriced.
My electric toothbrush charges through induction charging. Same principal as the power mat. Whoopee. Still have to put the phone in a specific location for a charge, so what is the big deal? dock it to a cable or lay it on a mat. The only real difference is that you can hold your phone and talk while it's charging when connected to a cable.
