As long as it is MADE specifically to work with the 3G or 3Gs, then it will stop charging when 100% is reached. If not, then it could be a crap shoot and you could over-charge your battery.
I would contact the manufacturer and verify with them. If you can get something in email, then if your phone does burn up, you at least have something to hold them accountable with so you can get a new phone.

Hawk, shouldn't you be able to tell if it's not overcharging by the battery icon image in the upper right corner? It should go from the lightning bolt image to the plug image when it's done charging. My thinking is that if it stays on the lightning bolt indefinitely, it is overcharging and if it changes to the plug symbol, within an hour or so, it's not overcharging. Correct me if I'm wrong, k?

I actually couldn't tell you. The problem being that I have never seen an iPhone over-charge.
I guess it depends on what causes the plug symbol to show up. It it is a certain percentage of power in the battery that triggers the symbol to switch from lightning to plug, then even with the plug it will continue to charge.
I get the plug symbol at 99% and it takles another 45 minutes to get to 100%. I think that there has to be some sort of chip from the charger that when it get a 100% reading from the device, it stops the charging process.

Honestly, I didn't know that the phone would charge off. If I turn my phone off and connect a cable, it wakes up. If it's connected to a cable and I turn the phone off, how would I know it's charging?
Like I said, it depends on the charger more than anything. The chargers are the devices making the decisions about when to stop, etc.

There have been times when I've wanted a restart to "refresh" the memory so I've powered down after starting an overnight charge session. If the phone overcharges, I'm well within my warranty ... (he said with crossed fingers) ...

YMMV
