Default 1v car chargers don't work on 3gs?

So my Alpine radio and my griffin car charger will not charge my new 3gs.

Am I doing something wrong?

They both play music I just get a message that it will not charge on the phone. Its upsetting since the battery life stinks on the new phones...

My $20 V1 charger works just fine , not sure why some other adapters don't.

If I remember correctly, the 3g and 3gs removed the FireWire charging capability. If that's what your adapter uses to charge, you're out of luck.

It depends on if the company that made them made them USB or Firewire.

Starting with the 3g Apple removed the extra connect that allowed for both firewire charging and USB charging. Now they charge via USB only. Some chargers still use the old firewire standard so they wont charge a 3g or 3gs but will charge the orginal V1 iPhone.

Well, I think you all inadvertantly answered one of my last two remaining questions before I order a 3GS. I have a 2009 Honda Pilot (Touring) with a USB port to play my iPhone music. It's tied into the GPS Nav screen so I can control everything from my console. It's a sweet setup, I love it. Anyway, I was concerned whether a 3GS would be compatible with it. It doesn't sound like I'll have any problems. Thanks.

I'll start a thread for my other question. Others might be interested in the subject.

Well, I had a AA battery charger for my V1 that also worked for 3G, but does not work on my 3GS now.

Scosche Passport Charge Converter. I've used this for about 4 months with my 3G and it also works great with my 3GS. I bought a generic ipod charge+audio to RCA cable from Circuit City before they went out of business and I went home and hooked it up in my pickup and no charge but GREAT audio sound so i bought this and all is well. I'm thinking of getting a 30-pin Dock Extension cable and putting the passport in the dash and just running the extension out as the passport is sort of bulky but it works great for now. It allows all pins to be routed through but on the charging pins it uses resistors to drop the voltage down from 12v firewire to the 5v USB power.
