Late to the party, but I've seen it on several occasions. It's hardly a show-stopper sort of bug. lock/unlock and you're fine.

happens to me too sometimes, on my factory unlocked 3GS that I purchased in Italy.

for those that complain that 3.0 was not tested enough, iPhone FW has been like this since 1.0. they will release a couple 3.0.x releases, but the FW will not be truly "stable" until the 3.1 FW.

Both of ours do this from time to time as well. I'm just happy that most of you think it's software related. I was fearing a hardware problem.

I have not had the screen issue happen again. I have noticed the fading clicks seem to be associated with the auto correct feature though. I just noticed that the other day.

I was taking pictures with my iPhone 3Gs on the beach on Saturday (direct sunlight and reflected light off of the water) when my backlight went out. So far restores and playing with the brightness settings are doing nothing to get my backlight going.

What does sunlight have to do with it?

I'm glad i've come across this thread, I've experienced this as well. It happens randomly for me, so I know it's nothing to do with any form of heat exposure.

Has anyone reported this having this problem on 3.1 ?

I have 3GS with 3.1 and it happened yesterday morning. Turned it off and back on and it was OK.
