Default Wife's 3G freezing

So my wife's 3G has been totally freezing on her, to the point that the phone actually turns itself off. She'll go to unlock her phone, and it'll flash the lock screen, then go black. The only thing to get it to work is a hard reset (home and power). Then after the reboot, it's real "laggy" for about 30 seconds, and then it runs smoothly again.

Her phone has never been jailbroken, and this just started over the last 3 or 4 days. Any suggestions?

Any new apps that are recent additions?

Tried a reset of all settings? PITA to put back in WiFi keys and similar after this - but less painful than a restore, but you know all that

Nope, nothing new. I made her sync and backup shortly after she told me about this, just in case, but she hasn't had it happen since Friday night...

Hope it settles down for her and stays more stable.

My 3G has been doing the same ever since 3.1
I set it on my night stand for 3 hours. It had been on the entire time. The time read 3 hours prior and it was really hot. Had to do a reset and let it cool down.

Nah. No need to jump the shark. A restore is overkill - most of the time.

how is it an overkill? 20 minutes of your time to restore and resync from a previous back-up to fix the problem.

This is a known issue with 3.1 - especially with the 3G model. Some people have restored and setup as new, and still cannot escape it.
I have had this happen a couple times, and as near as I can tell, it's a system crash from running out of available RAM. If you have an app that can free memory, I suggest you have her use it on a daily basis. I free memory at least 3 times a day, even when I have 20MB available.
One of the things I have noticed since 3.0 is that Mail, iPod, and Safari are not ending when I exit the app. Mail is the worst, requiring me to do a force quit to stop it from running. Free Memory app generally kills iPod and safari, but sometimes I have to manually kill iPod.

This exact same thing happened to me a few times last week, I thought it was a 3.1 thing too. I did end up doing a restore and set up as new phone, that was on Friday, and I haven't had the problem since and hoping I don't. I was ready to take it back for a new one.
