I've never had AT&T before, but on Verizon if you lost/damaged your phone you had to pay full retail unless your eligible for an upgrade. If you have their insurance (who is a 3rd party (Insurion)) you only had to pay $50, and depending on the price of your phone you might need to file a police report if it's lost/stolen.

funny thing actually.. this past weekend i dropped my phone while out with my girl. broke the front screen, its all white. but the front still works.. u740/alias for verizon. just took it into the store and said it just stopped working during a text msg i was writing. they were so busy, said come back in an hour to pick up my new phone. never asked me anything. just if i wanted to transfer my phonebook. lol.. ANYONE could have went in there at that very moment and got a new phone if it was wet, broke screen, stolen, ANYTHING.. their customer service sucks, but they have always been good at giving me a new phone if i was having problems.
