Default take iPhone to Europe

hey,
I am new here and I am leaving to Europe in few days. I decided to buy iPhone 3G, unlocked and prob. jailbroke. I have a few questions concerning me traveling with my iPhone. I will be traveling a lot around Europe so having GPS in my hand will be very useful.

I live in Canada, and the first question is;

Will the GPS work in Europe, after jailbreak and unlocking? and does it need wi-fi for GPS to work?

I know there are apps for Europe GPS etc, If i get the app, will it work just like that without paying for it when used?

Do you guys have any tips for me so I can get on my iPhone 3G 16GB in order to make my traveling easier... any useful apps, programs so I can get it for free or anything.

thanks for understanding and help!

GPS should work fine in most countries in Europe. Obviously you won't have WiFi everywhere, so you'll need to buy a pre-paid SIM card and input the correct APN settings for that network. I suggest deciding now on which SIM card you will use and writing the settings down for it. If you want, you can use the SIM card you got with your iPhone, although data charges will be expensive. And once you buy the app, that's it, nothing else has to be paid for unless additional content is available.

As for tips, I suggest you get a travel charger and a car charger if you are going to be driving a car. I also recommend buying some city guides for the countries you are visiting as they can be pretty handy.

thanks a lot...

I did some searching and I found out about the TomTom... I can save a map on my iPhone and thenI won't have to worry about having signal or not... it will show on a map where I am and so on...

about the guides, I will be getting the guides from app stores and so on.. I try not to carry a lot on me... I know from experience... so less is better... that is the main reason why i am getting my iPhone... guides GPS fights wifi... i will have everything in one gadget.

Yeah, TomTom should be fine, although I do recommend you get the cradle which lets you plug in to your car.

Indeed, that's why I love the AppStore. My iPhone could be so useful at school but they don't allow it. In the morning, I can use it as my alarm clock; it can tell me for any work I need to do; it can tell me my lesson timetables etc. When I get to school, I could use it as a calculator in Maths, reading books in Library and in English, Wikipedia for History work and so on. And let's say I'm walking home and I don't know the way, open Maps, type my address and I'm off. Amazing.
