Unhappy Sounds stop every so often

Hi
I have a 3G S iPhone. Every so often, my sounds don't work. Like my text notifier noise, or my phone ringing sounds.
I miss text messages often, and my settings are up as loud as they can be. Even when sitting with the phone right next to me, it may or maynot make a sound.
Any help, tips or advice would be great.
Thanks

hmm thats an issue ive run into when i use my headphones and unplug too quickly. when it happens i would suggest a reset by holding down the power button and the home button at the same time until you see the apple on the screen. that should correct the issue. i have no idea what would cause the issue. maybe some of the others have better ideas

I had this happen a couple of times, then the sound became very low, distorted and crackly. A trip to the Apple store genius bar resulted in a swap out for a refurbed unit as it seemed to be a hardware issue.

i also ran into similar problems wen disconnecting my headphones too fast. it eventually got to the point where any sudden movement would cause my phone to think i had headphones plugged in. next time that happens, adjust your volume using the side buttons and see if the screen reads "headphones" or "ringer". it could just be a faulty sensor.

btw, u can quickly fix the problem (temp) by just pluggin in your headphones and unplugging them, resetting the sensor. i ended up getting another phone from apple because of this issue.
