What you are saying makes no sense.

You do NOT need to jailbreak to restore / update. That would be ludicrous.

Put the phone into DFU mode. Instructions are above. The screen will remain black - then iTunes will say it has found an iPhone and a restore is required.

also when i tried to go on normal recovery mode and use the normal recovery (instead of shift click and choose the ipsw) it gave me an error saying my internet is out of date? i mean wtf???

another thing i want to make clear is that i think my iphone might be on a unworkable OS3.1.2 atm, so even if i use redsn0w, will it downgrade it when i chose the OS3.0 ipsw?

You are giving lots of contradicting info. You are now saying you have restored and have a working 3.1.2 and you just want to JB it?

Redsn0w doesnt work with 3.1.2 for a start

holy ****! DFU mode takes 1 and half hour to dl the update? is there anyway i can just restore and not install undate?

You must have a poor internet connection, to DL an update through itunes takes 20 mins for me!

well can you tell i must restore and update and not only restore right? (unless i manually chose the ipsw myself)

and also 1 more thing how can i tell if i am using DFU and not Recovery mode?

If i remember correctly, when you restore, a pop up shows stating a new version of the firmware is available and you have 3 options. Download and install / download only / dont download.

If you dont have that option then unless you select the ispw yourself then you must download. If its saying it needs to download though, that means you cant have the ispw in your iTunes. Just let it do its thing
