long distance SMS problem? iphone 3g

I've got an iphone 3g, jail broken and unlocked (latest pwnage tool and ultrasn0w) using it on tmobile. I can send sms and mms messages to anyone that has a phone number with the same area code as me (985) but when i try to send to people in other states with other area codes they don't go through. Ive messaged people in 3 different states and they haven't gotten any of my messages. Any ideas?

I tried adding a 1 in front of their numbers (which i never had to do on tmobile before with other phones) and that isn't working either.

This may be obvious to some people but the way I fixed my problem was to add +1 in front of all the long distance/out of state phone numbers. I've never had to do this on any phone I've used with tmobile. I guess it's something about how the iphone works.
