Have you tried a sim card from another iPhone? I don't think just any AT&T card will work.

If it's an american iPhone then you will need an iPhone specific SIM card for it to work. It's the same with the UK as well. Perhaps other countries.

I don't think it's has anything to do with it being a 'brand new' SIM card. It has to be 3G enabled, I know most phone's/SIMs come with 3G but some of the older SIMs will only have GPRS/EDGE.

I remember my transition from the v1 to the 3G. o2 gave me a new SIM and ported my number over because it wouldn't work in the phone.

Again, have you tried a SIM from another iPhone specifically? As others have mentioned, you need a certain type of SIM.

If you want to get technical, you could take the device apart and replace certain parts. You just need to be careful, with what you do. It may not even have anything to do with the SIM card housing. The phone maybe blocked. If you've unlocked it, try a foreign SIM card, if you can get hold of one that is.

If it has been blocked then the IMEI has been blocked. The only way to get round the block is to use a foreign SIM. (sorry for the use of block-ed)
