Yes the $10 more is going to be for the increased bandwith but its also tacked on to increase revenue, edge data would use the same bandwith only at a slower rate. The enriched surfing is due to the iphone itself and has nothing to do with ATT.
The $10 more for 3g will also go toward recouping the subsidy. The same way that texting has an outrageous markup.
ATT would never not allow an iphone owner not to upgrade and increase their monthly bill, it doesnt make business sense.
With that said I think its a good deal, I wouldnt mind 10 bucks more for double the edge speed.
first of all the iphone data plan in all honestly was not overpriced. for regular phones that aren't pda's of some sort, such as the new lg vu or the razr, the internet is 15 dollars. And at&t's text cost is $5 for 200 text, $15 for 1500 text and 20 for unlimited. so only the unlimited everything package meaning text and net was 5 dollars more than normal but the others packages were just bundled.
also i never said at&t would never allow an iphone owner to upgrade and increase their bill, in fact i said the direct opposite, I said at&t customer's that had the iphone 1, even though they are not eligible for an upgrade technically, they will still have the option the iphone for 199/299.
and another thing, at&t really doesn't care if your going to pay more for your monthly bill, they will not just upgrade you, that's just horrible business move. Customers are getting discounts on their phones b/c phone companies have eligibility requirements. Around 8 months left on your contract is the general rule of thumb on when you can upgrade if you have at&t. The reason is b/c they know your contract will expire soon, so to entice you to sign a new 2 year agreement they will drop the price of the phone and offer different promotions every month. Now believe it or not, when you buy a phone at a promotional price from a cell phone company, they are losing money at that point, b/c the price of the cell phones are not cheap, and in fact the cost of the phones is near the suggested retail price! the only reason they discount it is b/c they know they are locking you in for another 2 years and you will have to pay a monthly bill for 2 years. Phone companies will not let you upgrade your phone for the promotional pricing just b/c ur bill is going to be 10 dollars more, it all has to do with the how long you have left in your contract. Don't believe me? Go start a new service with any carrier and get a phone for the promo price. then 3 months later tell them you want to upgrade and see how much fun you go though
