Default I hate contracts!!!

Hello.

Ive been thinking of buying an iphone for a while, but the idea of binding myself for 2 years with att held me back. fortunately, i read somewhere that you could go to an att store, tell them you want an iphone, but that you dont want to sign the contract in store. instead, you want to go to your house and sign up through itunes. once in itunes, you put a fake SSN, fail the credit check, and voila!!!, att offers you prepaid plans, no contract at all.

my question is: Is all this possible?

And if it is, will the iphone cost the normal 300 dollars (16 gb, white), or will att charge me 600 dollars. (keep in mind im telling them i will get the contract at home.)

Thanks in advance.

Just buy an unlocked iPhone on ebay and you won't have to worry about a contract.

Why would he need an unlocked? Maybe I missed it.

He could buy a stock 3G and use it on AT&T without a contract...of course, he will be paying a premium over the 2yr contract $199/299 cost.

A contract with AT&T is only for the discounted price and is not needed for phone/internet service.

I don't know what the huge fear of signing a 2 year contract is. You're going to have a phone longer than two years, what gives? Who would want to switch their service every few months anyways.

I agree. The early termination fee is $200 IIRC (maybe $250). If you buy a phone with the 2 year agreement, you save $200 because it's subsidized. So either way, (early termination or buying one without a contract) you'll lose that $200. I'd just do the contract and take the chance that you'll stay with AT&T for two years, that's really the only way to not lose that $200.

The ETF is $175 and its prorated now. So, it drops like $5-10 every month. So, in a year, if you hate AT&T and want to leave, you only have to pay like half of the $175. Much better than it used to be before they started prorating.
