It's possible that you've spoken to people who just can't verbalize it correctly, but if you read the terms of service, you'll see that "Microsoft Direct Push" requires an enterprise plan. If you are syncing with Exchange, that's what you need.

If they do have documentation that says that corporate email is "any email behind a firewall", I would be seriously surprised. I don't know of ANY email service that's NOT behind a firewall.

I don't know what the 'terms of service' state, but I have Exchange Direct Push email coming to me and I am on the personal $30 data plan. What happens if I were using push email from MobileMe or Yahoo or maybe I signed up for an account at 4smartphone.com because I wanted push email and calendar? Is ATT going to force me to buy a $15 more expensive plan because of the technology I use to receive my mail?

Also, your link does not point to any relevant iPhone data plans. It points to all data plans except the iPhone ones.

You don't know what the terms of service are, but you signed a contract saying that you would abide by them? Hmmmm...

As I said in my original post, you can sync Exchange on the $30 plan (a plan which is, by the way, documented on the link I presented), but it's outside of the terms of service to do so. Therefore, whether or not you do it is not guided by any technical limitation. It is purely a decision of ethics.

My eithics say that if it's not illegal (meaning by law of my state) then I am not doing anything wrong, except getting what I need for less $. I assure you I am not alone. Hey, if you feel like giving away $15 per month to ATT, I have no problem with that; it's your money.

I completely agree that you're not alone. I don't agree that ethics are guided by law. However, I didn't intend this to turn into a debate on ethics. I was merely trying to inject some factual information about the issue because I am researching getting an iPhone right now and the costs that it would entail.

Well, the costs it would entail are the voice plan and the $30 data plan that you can receive Exchange Push Email through. Not a $45 data plan.

If you want to abide by the terms of service from AT&T, you must purchase the enterprise plan to sync with Microsoft Direct Push/Exchange. The $30 personal data plan is not a valid plan for corporate email.

I believe we're right back where we started.

Yes, but I know plenty of individuals that have Exchange Server running at home for their personal email, and only their personal email.

I WAS SERIOUSLY SURPRISED... that is why i am amazed at whomever wrote that documentation... while I cannot seem to get my hands on it... i have had seriously a minimum of a dozen people (employees) at AT&T quote it and read it verbatim to me... followed by "that's all the information that i have"...

I also mentioned that any "reasonable" email server is sitting behind a firewall... and i told them that google and yahoo are probably behind a firewall (i assumed)... and it left them speechless.

but, what ticks me off even more is that they (at&t) told me every outrageous explanation as to what would work and what wouldn't. And, when I told them had some serious technical expertise behind me and asked for clarification... no one, but no one, could put things in clear terms.
I asked for written docs, and they offered me the web site, on which it states absolutely nothing clearly.

they kept pointint me to this:
Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone
When using iPhone to access corporate email, company intranet sites, and/or other business solutions/applications.
Data Plan for iPhone
When using iPhone for access to personal email, web browsing, or consumer applications such as games.

they even told me that the enterprise servers are faster for only the enterprise plan.

they also claim that all the enterprise features are only available with an enterprise account... apple contradicts them...

basically, no matter how you look at it... AT&T is doing the same thing they do with land lines... if it is business, they charge you more... or at least try to...

basically, no matter how you look at it... it is VERY poorly handled.

There's no doubt about that. In fact, when my contact at AT&T told me I needed the enterprise plan to sync with Exchange, I questioned him because I know a lot of people at work who use the iPhone to sync with Exchange on the personal plan. He pointed me to the terms and conditions, and they make it clear that the enterprise plan is needed for corporate email syncing on Exchange.

I don't agree with a $15 charge for something that doesn't add anywhere near that much cost to AT&T, but when I get my iPhone, I will pay the $45 because that's what the T&C specify.
