Question A couple of iTunes/Cydia/and IM client questions...

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out just how I can selectively sync certain songs that I have had for a lot longer than I've had the iPhone 3G to the iPhone's iPod. I remember when I first installed iTunes, it asked me if it "should look through my entire hard drives" to find all my music files, and add them to my library.

I cannot seem to find this setting anymore.

Also, am I able to sync, and backup, all the apps from Cydia and the Installer apps (the two jailbreak apps) to iTunes?

Finally, the AIM application STILL does not stay on in the background, which is highly annoying, and just strange that it would do that. I downloaded IM+, but haven't played around with it. When BeeJiveIM comes to the iPhone, all will be well in the IM world, but until then, is there any way to have AIM (or any other currently available IM clients) work and stay ON in the background???

In the Settings ---> AIM, there is even an option "Sign off on Exit", and I have it on "NO". It just doesn't work.

Thanks everyone...

To sync only selected songs: under summary of your iphone page, check the box for "Sync only checked songs and videos". Then uncheck anything you don't want synced.

If the AIM app is from the app store, it won't be able to work in the background. No App can work after it's closed. Try mobilechat, it lets you stay logged in because your login is stored on a server (however it's really buggy for now).

I don't think you can backup cydia apps through itunes.

Why is it that AIM can't run in the background?? Without that obvious "functionality", it's basically almost useless. Is there no multitasking, even of this simple kind, available on the iPhone?

Thanks for any replies!

if you using the AIM app from the app store. you can go to settings> aim> and turn off "sign off on exit"

therefore you can leave the app for a while and get back to it and get all your missed i.ms

That's good advice, thank you. However, I had found AIM under the settings a while ago, and did that very thing you said to do, to no avail. I also tried re-installing it, and a few other things.

Do you use AIM from the App Store? Does it run in the background for you?

Thanks!

There is one option to backing up your Cydia apps. But it won't save any apps settings. If you create a backup with Aptbackup it will make a list of everything you've downloaded in Cydia. The list will be saved when you sync your phone. So when you restore and jailbreak, you just need to install Aptbackup and restore. All the apps on the list will be put back on your phone.

On the contrary, Intelliscreen runs in the background.

I know this is an old thread, but I noticed one of CrunchDude's questions was discussed, but never correctly answered. When you use that "when exiting AIM sign off after X minutes" option in the AIM app, all it does is have the AIM server tell everyone else that you're signed on when you really aren't. If anyone sends you an IM, the AIM server holds onto that messge, and then delivers it to you the next time you sign on.

From AIM on iPhone: Frequently Asked Questions - Discover AOL:

Settings
What does Sign-off on Exit do?
Choosing Sign-off on Exit will cause AIM to sign you off of the AIM network when you exit the AIM application. By default, AIM will leave you signed in for about 5 minutes after exiting AIM and will queue any messages received during that time and deliver them if you return within that period.
