Hello, sorry if im bumping an old thread, but i have a few questions about this deposit, as i just tried to buy the iphone 3G from the online apple store through AT&T and it said i needed a $500 deposit also (I'm 18). Do you have to pay the deposit just to get an account with AT&T? Also, once you pay the deposit, do you still make the monthly payments and one year later they refund you the $500?

You still pay your monthly dues if you want to start establishing credit. That money is there in case you don't pay them. Then they can just keep it and they aren't risking anything by signing you up since they don't have any kind of track record on whether or not you pay your bills.

I think y'all should do what I do. Buy a 3G at the unsubsidized price (or in my case just make a trade with someone, or craigslist) and get a pay as you go sim and WHALA! u got a 3G and at the cheapest rate in the world!

if you have to have someone cosign (in anything in life) then you shouldn't be getting it in the first place.
