Yes, I am aware that the V1's antenna is just in the bottom black piece. The whole thing is painted, and there is no difference at all. It has been painted for 2+ months now.

If paints going to affect the signal whats a silicone case going to do?

Personally I like the red one but 3 weeks without my iphone isnt going to happen. It'd be nice if they could increase their turn time.

Ordinary paints have no metal powder in them , of course 'metallic' paints do !. Silicone does not hinder RF ; silicone is NOT metallic . Sure , metallic paint won't make a real BIG drop in signal , but it will weaken it some . Sometime that little bit extra might make the difference between good transmission and reception , dropped calls ,etc. so.. when you want the best signal why sacrifice it any at all just to get a hot rod paint job?! If you think about it , why do you think Apple voids the warranty on a metallic painted phone !!??!!1,...Ford won't void your warranty on a customer metallic painted car !... because it won't affect the performance !! And for a final little bit, a metallic paint job could under some circumstances shorten your battery charge up life. How ?... because when your cell phone is in an area of poor signal strength , ex: down in the car seat , in your pants pocket, close to a lot of large metal object, etc.etc, (all this if you are in a weak area anyway), the cell towers are always polling the phones and have the phones automatically send them back a signal so that they, the towers, know where you are in order for the cell co. to connect you with incoming-outgoing calls. When your signal is weak or weakened , they have to poll you more often and thus your phone polls them back more often. Also when you are in a weak signal area ,for whatever reason, your phone automatically 'pumps up' the output power somewhat to try to make the best connection possible because of the weakened signal. When the phone has to do that ..of course the battery runs down much faster .

I have to admit your explanation makes sense BUT anytime you modify your iphone in any way shape or form your going to void the warranty and yes if you painted your Ford and started to develop body rust soon after Ford would tell you their not responsible due to the paint job.

When I first bought my phone I asked if a leather case with a magnet on it would have a negative effect my phone, my train of thought was the magnet would have an adverse effect on the battery and or the sim card, his reply was absolutely not. Beings I wasn't to sincere about purchasing a leather case I didn't see any reason in pursuing the matter.

If I were to use your logic wouldn't driving around in my truck cause me to lose signal strength?

Driving around in your truck WILL reduce your signal as compared to riding around on your bicycle in the same area ..
I brought up the Ford paint as to mean a ciustom paint job may void the body rust warranty but not the alternator or the piston or the heater or anything else . In the iPhone , the metallic paint does block some signal and thus can cause more battery discharge , dropped call ability etc. ...Apple would be stupid NOT to void the warranty under those circumstances ! The iPhone case encloses all electronic parts ---the antennae of which there are 10 or more in the iPhone can be blocked . Would you expect to wrap your phone in aluminum foil and get a good signal ? NO . Granted , metallic paint is not as dense as aluminum foil but it is still composed of metal powder. Compare it another way if you will. ...when you put on sun glasses , you can still see out of course but NOT as sharp and good as without them ...same as with metallic paint blocking the rf signals into and out of the iPhone.
As for the magnetic latch cases, I've used several and the ones I used had the magnets adjacent to the FRONT of the iPhone whereas the antennae on the V1 and 3G are in the back of the iPhone so there is very little if any blocking rf .The iPhone front has the mike, speaker , home switch , etc etc and that's why the antennae were located in the back .
As a Final , don't you think that if the metallic paint did NOTHING to the operation of the phone that Apple themselves wouldn't have come out with all sorts of metallic paint jobs to sell even more phones ?? No , do what you want but if I want a bright cherry red metallic -racing striped -flamed Tonka Toy, I would buy one of those , I sure wouldn't spend $300-500 for one .

Rather than go round and round around about this I called Apple technical support and she said that anytime you modify your phone be it hardware or software would void the warranty, she also stated the amount of metal flake used would be so minuscule that it wouldn't affect the reception on the phone.

Wow both phones look incredible, however my favorite is the blue one. I am not sure that I could go three weeks without my phone to do this. There is also the question about warranty, but it does look very cool. Thank you so much for sharing these pictures with everyone, I am truly impressed.
