Long shot, but try reset network settings. Are you trying to connect via wifi? If so, you may have to configure the settings.

Maybe the sim has incompatible bolt on settings for the iPhone internet connection. In reading O2 site it specifically says you shuold use the sim that comes with the phone on pay as you go plans. Is the cost higher for the iPhone on pay and go?

O2 have to switch you to an iPhone tariff. As long as the contract your on is Ł45 p/m you shouldnt have a problem. You wont be able to access visual voicemail / mms / internet without switching.

Its done over the phone and its instant (withing 12 hours)

Thanks for your reply, I took the sim back today and after a bit of messing about they said the sim was no good and I will be sent a new one in the post ten days lol.

Still I did get my contract sim to work in the end it was a setting that was wrong, I could not find it, I did look all over but must have just missed it, I had been trying to get it to work for hours so was getting fed up.

Any way good news is its working, just need to find out now why its so so slow getting web pages to show, still Ill keep at it.

Im having to learn every thing a new, New first Imac and First ever iphone in the same week, all good fun.

Thanks for all your help
