The SDK is public. You can download it for free (just signing in with your Apple ID aka iTunes account) at http://developer.apple.com/

edit: Did you mean software update 2.0? in which case, yes, I'd like that very much, as I am changing jobs right around the middle of June and it'd be great to have my app out there to the public so I can get some income to get me by in case I don't have a job by the time I have to pay rent...

When you install the SDK, you get an application under /Developer/Applications called Xcode. That can be used to make programs that will run on the iPhone or iPod Touch. If you just have the free version of the SDK, you can only run the application on the included iPhone Simulator, but if you got into the developer program ($99), you receive a different version that comes with the ability to place your program on your device to test it, as well as the ability to submit (i guess?) the application to be included in the app store.

I'm hoping I get accepted and up to speed with the SDK with plenty enough time to get my first program developed and pushed out, because I think the launch of the app store will be really critical to anyone, like me, looking to start up in this market.

Don't expect 1.2/2.0 to hit iTunes until June 30. We all learned last year that when El Jobso says "late June", he means the last workday of the month.
