Verizon May Charge Motorola Droid Users for Exchange Access'

The Droid supports Microsoft Exchange’s ActiveSync feature that lets users access e-mail, calendar and contacts from their corporate servers running Exchange. But they could end up paying extra for the privilege, says InfoWorld.

Droid users could pay at least an additional $15 to $20 a month on top of their data plan for Exchange access. That means $45 to $50 a month including Exchange support instead of $30 a month for a data-only plan. Droid will be exclusively available on the Verizon network for $200 with a two-year contract.

Suddenly the Droid... isnt all what its cracked up to be.

This, and add the doubled cancellation fee... seems pretty expensive to those who we're considering the droid (Im happy with my iPhone, i've had it for about a year now and its not going anywhere).

Considering the iPhone supports Exchange and it's included in the $30 data plan, I don't see how this could help Verizon and the Droid. Though, there are those people out there that will have Verizon's first born baby and do what they say and pay what they want...

BGR has said Verizon has squashed this rumor already. They will not be charging extra for Exchange support

There have been rumors flying around the intertubes that Verizon is planning to charge an extra $15/month to allow your shiny new Motorola DROID to be hooked up to Microsoft’s Exchange email enviroment. Well, we are happy to confirm that, for consumer lines anyway, these rumors are false. The folks over at Gearlog received clarification from Verizon’s headquarters about the rumored $45/month data mandate, and it looks as though it’s for corporate responsible user accounts only. Individual accounts and family lines, whether you use Exchange or not, will still cost just $30/month. Good news for future DROID owners out there, and just the same as how the iPhone pricing works on AT&T.

I remember similar rumors about the iPhone when it came out with Exchange support.

ATT has the same constantly ignored rule, btw. Check your iPhone data plan terms:

Use of iPhone 3G to access corporate email, company intranet sites, and/or other business applications requires an Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone.

As for the raised ETF, I think ATT and other carriers will soon copy it. The subsidies on the latest smartphones are just getting too high. You can read carrier financial reports... they're all listing far higher amounts of their money stuck for years in subsidies, and they blame smartphones.

EIC's sister site everythingandroid is reporting that verzion will enable tethering in early 2010...... and that they will chage an extra $30.00 per month for it...... Perhaps AT&T was waiting for VZW to announce that price before making their tethering option available....

very possible. i however would not be paying that much to tether. i would however pay an extra $10 on my data for it, but thats probably as high as i would go

Good point, that leaves the door open for Verizon to offer the long awaited iPhone tethering plan.

Sounds like they are no different from wireless card plans. $30 for 5GB.

With all that talk of open source, where's the unofficial Droid tethering option? (kicks himself for not jumping on that iPhone tethering program that macgirl bought when it hit the App Store).
