My iPhone seems to have better reception than my Treo 650 or 680 (both on Cingular). That being said, I don't think the Treo phones were exactly the tops reception-wise!

I am in a different boat. My iPhone gets full reception in places where my razor and ipaq would get no reception at all. I find in most places I have better reception then I have had with other phones and othersthat have AT&T or verizon around me.

The true test for me is how my reception will be when I go back to school which is much more rural then my parents hometown

My razor phone and my i-phone both get about the same reception. I travel a lot too. But so far, no issues.

Im new to AT&T and am completely boggled by the fact that a 10 sq. ft. area can have BOTH full reception and no reception at all depending where and in what position you stand in. Ive really just been biting my tongue and dealing with it, but its starting to get redonkulous.
Oh well, hopefully they get their service and/or antenna worked out for everyone.

I have also noticed this.
At first I thought I had OK reception but now I am noticing a lot of "low bars" area. Even in my own living room. Yesterday I was on a call with someone while my husband was driving the car, the call came in and out and terrible reception during the drive. It was awful. My mom lives near mountains and I cannot get reception there at all. I did not have this problem with Verizon. I got reception everywhere, even at my mom's house and traveling. I don't think AT&T can beat Verizon with their coverage area either.

you know, I do find strange reception differences in some weird situations. My Razr had a little better reception in some areas but I was with tmobile. My ipaq, however, was a completely different story. That thing was alful and we were replacing firmware in less than six months on that thing. Most people just took theirs back. Some of us learned on that thing and that's why we tend to defend the iPhone. Its not the very best but in savannah its fine.

I have been pleasantly surprised with my iPhone's ability to hold a signal, and to make calls. And I live in an area with less-than-stellar at&t coverage (Radio Shack here won't even sell at&t, as they claim they got too many complaints about lack of coverage).

I bought the iPhone knowing this, but hoping for the best. I figured coverage/phone quality would be obvious within the 3 day (with no restocking or activation fee) return period.

Turns out my iPhone works better as a phone than the Treo (Sprint) it replaced. Haven't had a dropped call yet, and the sound quality is noticeably better than my Treo's. Sprint has excellent coverage around here, I should note (but no EV-DO!).

Also note that the coverage here still isn't great: I often have 0-1 bars on my iPhone. But it hasn't stopped me from making calls. EDGE isn't so great with 0 bars, but it's still faster than the CDMA 1x I had on my Treo 650.

Finally, I drove 2.5 hours--through desolate desert--with a friend who had an at&t RAZR. Both the RAZR and my iPhone had adequate signal nearly the whole way--and both were about equal reception-wise.

I think this is just a GSM issue. I can sit in front of my PC here at work and get almost no service, but if i turn to my credenza to grab something, it immediately goes back to full service. My Tmobile service was the same way. I could walk down a hall and it would die, but once I would step into an office, it came right back.
