Mystery..LED??

I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this but if you look at the very top of your iPhone right above where the speaker for your ear is there are two "things" that look like they could be LEDs or something. I am not sure. The one on the left is just a circle while the one just to the right of it is a rectangle but with rounded edges. You have to look VERY close as at first I thought I had air bubbles in my screen

One of the things that annoys me coming from a Blackberry is no external notification of a new message. The Blackberry has that little light that tells you that you have a messge and is nice in that you can look across a room without having to turn your phone's screen on to see if you need to check anything.

Future functionality?

Those are the sensors that cause the phone to turn off when you lift it to the side of your head...the proximity sensors...no new functionality.

I guess I would have to wonder why it needs two..

Perhaps one is a photocell to detect ambient lighting to adjust brightness when on 'auto'. I have wondered where that might be... I can't see either of the things you are talking about.

Shine a bright flashlight above the speaker so it doesn't reflect directly back into your eyes...at an angle. Easy to see under the glass.

well testing during a call showed me that the one to the left is the prox sensor. Covering whatever is on the right didn't have any obvious effect.

The one on the right is the ambient light sensor. It only tests the light when turning the phone from sleep mode. This is to save battery life instead of detecting the amount of light all the time.

it needs two because one sends out IR and the other recieves it telling the iPhone when to turn off the screen
