Forwarding Hotmail to Gmail

I've been trying to get Hotmail email working on my friends iPhone for over a week. She had one Hotmail email address and probably had 1,000 emails on the their server. The first thing I did, was set up an IMAP Gmail account for her. I then forwarded the Hotmail to that account. It took a day or so, but all of the old emails forwarded to the Gmail account. However, no new ones came through. They all continue to go to Hotmail or get lost. I deleted the Gmail account on the phone, stopped the forwarding, and then set it all up again. She still isn't getting any new Hotmail emails forwarded. Gmail is working fine. AFAIK, Hotmail is POP only, so I don't want to set it up on her phone, since she needs to access the email on her Mac. I did try setting it up on the phone anyway, but got a POP error.

1-Is it not working since Gmail is set up as IMAP and Hotmail will only allow POP?
2-Aside from ditching Hotmail all together or setting it up on the phone as POP, what are the options?
3-Will this work if she becomes a Windows Live Hotmail Plus subscriber?

I don't know if it'll help or not, but I ran across it. Just ditch the Hotmail and go with Gmail!
