Default Edge icon changes from city to city

ok I have been in Orlando the past week at the PGA show and had to do a fresh restore and jailbreak while there because of an app that made my phone unstable. Some of you may be familiar with that.
Well, I noticed that edge was extremly slow compared with what I'm used to in Savannah. I also noticed that the edge icon was just a square blue box with no "E" in it. I was able to surf and access this site and so I figured no big deal. I'm on the way back to Savannah right this second and was cruzin these forums when suddenly the little edge icon suddenly appeared with the "E" in it. It happened right before my eyes. Also an enormous amount of speed was instant! This just happened 15 mins ago as we neared Jacksonville, FL on I-95.
Anyone else notice this edge icon thing or maybe be able to tell me what happened?

Edge is 2.5G I think? So basically, if you get outside the Edge area, you'll drop back to 2G (GPRS) service and you'll lose your precious "E"... resulting in a blue square. You'll still get voice and data service, but it will be slow (<50kbps likely)

I've noticed this strange Edge Icon since upgrading to 1.1.2, and the speed is slower when it's on.

Is it indicating that just GPRS is available?????

Interesting, I just assumed this was a software bug.

AT&T has been having issues with Edge, all over the U.S. This week. I was in Des Moines, Iowa (I know, wow what an exciting place, NOT) the same thing was happening with Edge there. Edge was very, very slow and sometime, not working at all. So it's an AT&T problem, not the iPhone or the new update..Mark
