Sorry I just don't see why this is a big deal to everyone. I think Apple may have put out that statement as a form of posturing or chest puffing but I don't think they are going to do anything about it. And they didn't hack the competitions software, they just coded the Pre to identify itself as an iPod.
Apple stands to lose more in music sales than they would gain by blocking the Pre. Now that all iTunes music is DRM free wouldn't they WANT more devices to work with their software to keep people from buying from other avenues? Personally it doesn't matter to me either way I'll just drag and drop my music if I have to or use "Missing Sync". I think it's Apple fans making a fuss over this than anything. The Pre is an awesome phone but it is not a threat to the iPhone simply because of the popularity of the iPhone. The Pre is an alternative, and a darn great one at that but it is not going to put a huge dent in iPhone sales until it is sold by all carriers, and even then that would be doubtful. Hype and marketing are not strong suits of Palm.
I see no advantage whatsoever in Apple making any kind of move. And I don't see any patent infringement suits on the behalf of either company because they both have cases against each other and both companies would end up losing in the end and the only ones that would benefit are the lawyers.
