3G does not imply higher current consumption in the relevant portion of the radio's transmit/receive portion. Therefore, it should be just as efficient as the existing model; perhaps even more as it operates at backed-off powers compared to the 2.5G EDGE version.

3G does imply two separate radios though, one for the standard voice/EDGE network and another for the UMTS network. What I am saying is that previous and current implementations of 3G devices have poor battery life when used in 3G environments (as compared to when they are not used in 3G areas or when the 3G radio is disabled) as implemented on the Samsung Blackjack, for example. That isn't theory, it is daily practical usage. However, maybe Apple has yet another trick in their bag of tricks for us... only time will tell.

I agree, but what they will do is get other efficiencies out of the phone. That and a decent antenna switch will do the job. They will need to spend a little more on the front-end than on the last one and couple it with enhanced effiencies throughout the rest of the phone. They can and will do it. I know they will.

The battery life issue really concerns me. I hope and pray they find a way to sustain good battery life when the next phone comes. All the features in the world wouldn't mean jacksquat if you could only use them for 3-4 hours a day.

At around the time that 3G was being speculated about for the iPhone 2 (right around when the first price drop hit) there was already an announcement that one of the companies that produce the 3G chips has made one that consumes less power than the standard 3G chip.
I don't think that power is going to be an issue, since I believe that the current battery is going to be replaced for something a little more powerful and/or possibly smaller.

So Amir made this prediction in January about the new iPhone coming out.

I have one question: Were you just fluffing when you made this prediction?

When is the new phone coming out?

I hope your correct about the battery.

I don't think you really understand the complexity of the process... up until a few weeks ago, they themselves didn't even know the exact date. What you don't get, yes, you specifically, is that there are literally a few dozen companies that go inside the iPhone. There are the components that go inside the phone, that they give them specs to design to, and then there are the all the tweaks and changes they are making to the interface and the form factor... meanwhile, their suppliers have to develop what they ask for and no, it's not like it comes off their shelf (not legacy parts being used)...too much to really plan an exact date for.

It's complicated as you can see. If you get any of it that is.

So, to answer you: it is likely to come out in June. As of now, that's the best we can guess and they themselves can guess.

To Amir:

I have B.S. in Mechanical Engineering so "I get" how long testing and development can take to upgrade an iphone.

I sent you a private message about the iphone release and you never got back to me, thats the only reason I thought you were making a random prediction about the iphone release date.

I never meant to insult you, but don't demean my intelligence either for asking for clarifcation on your prediction.

Thanks,

Greer
