Edge might not be the fastest network, but it is one of the most widely covered in the US. That's one of the main reasons Apple went with AT&T (plus the fact that they are a GPM network)
As far as GPS is concerned, for "true" GPS, you have to pay an additional fee for a supported phone to use it. With the My location feature on the next version of Firmware coming up, this is hardly anything to write home about, unless AT&T somehow miraculously doesn't charge for GPS service for the new iPhones...
So far, the 2 biggest hype points of the next iPhone version are batting .000
What exactly do you consider the "2 biggest hype points..."? Most users who have been using data capable phones for a while now (I've had various smartphones since 2002), are familiar with the ins and outs of 3G and spotty coverage. It IS coming eventually, and it's fantastic when available. As far as GPS, really, this is one feature I'd just as soon not have in my phone. Personally, I don't want to pay the expense for a GPS radio in a device with a screen so small, real time GPS is only usable while on foot. Triangulation would (most of the time) be adequate for that purpose. I don't want to have to use my iPhone screen for driving directions (while driving). I'd rather have a real GPS with a 4 or 5 inch screen that has voice interaction.
To me, 1.1.3 update aside, the big draw for the NEXT iPhone would be 16/32GB, file management, 3G (even though I don't have access yet), FLASH (a giant biggie), and document interactivity (.doc and .pdf, at least). Obviously, some of these are software driven, so hopefully the SDK will open up some of these features for our current devices, but without more memory (significantly) and a 3G radio, I will probably not upgrade when the next hardware implementation arrives. Additionally, I would love to see the option to go landscape in all screens. Typing is just a lot easier in that orientation.
