Wow, I forgot about the Datacassette. Boy did I hate those, it took forever to load long programs and I had a lot of problems with faulty cassettes.

But like you said "I guess it's like havine the Internet on your Cell Phone. You don't know what you're missing until you have it!" Since I haven't used 3G I'm content with Edge.

so let me get this straight, edge is something you would have to pay extra for and only works in edge areas which aren't as common?

No. EDGE is avilable most places and is the default data carrier method. 3G is the newer less available technology, and based on the 3G capable phones out there, the non 3G iPhone data plan is the exception in ATTs data pricing. All the other plans are more expensive and include EDGE and 3G (where available). The only way to have a $20 plan that includes 3G is if you bought the unlimited Media plan from Cingular years ago and were still using it. I was until I had to switch to the iPhone plan. Data is data. The problem is if you're using an iPhone, you cant access 3G because the iPhone isnt capable.

so if the 3g phone comes out, then you would have to pay for a more expensive data plan that would encompass both 3G and EDGE. And you might not get 3G coverage everywhere?

If your iPhone is 1.1.2 you have free ringtones available, also if the 1.1.3 update is for real, you will have psuedo-GPS via triangulation of cell towers.

Just looked at at&ts 3g map, and I don't spend any part of my life in a covered area. Nothing between SF and LA along the coast.

It's been stated plenty of times. 3g coverage is poor in the US through AT&T. Those that argue differently either a) live in a 3g area, or b) travel to the major cities that have coverage.
Anyone living in the outskirts of a major metropolitan area have a 50/50 shot of using it, and it goes downhill from there.
Edge might not be the fastest network, but it is one of the most widely covered in the US. That's one of the main reasons Apple went with AT&T (plus the fact that they are a GPM network)
As far as GPS is concerned, for "true" GPS, you have to pay an additional fee for a supported phone to use it. With the My location feature on the next version of Firmware coming up, this is hardly anything to write home about, unless AT&T somehow miraculously doesn't charge for GPS service for the new iPhones...

So far, the 2 biggest hype points of the next iPhone version are batting .000

I'm in the 50/50 bracket. I was using the Moto Q 9h and I rarely saw the 3G icon. Personally, I don't think they can hang their hat on 3G as the primary reason to upgrade.

I also own the Curve 8310 with GPS. However, I use a Garmin for that purpose.

All in all, I'm with you at .000.

Thanks for verifying my statement. Coming from you might help drive home the fact that those that run out and buy the new iPhone (as it is currently purposed/speculated) are just wasting their money.
Can you confirm for me that they charge a fee for the GPS on the curve?
Thanks!
