Default Interesting domain name owned by Apple

With all this talk about what will be introduced and when it will be revealed, I did a quick little search of domain names and came up with an interesting find.

www.newton.com redirects to the www.apple.com home page.

It has been predicted in the past that there would be a new netbook, slate, or tablet introduced in the near future (possibly q3 or q4, along with iphone 3.0) and I agree with a few earlier posters that this product will be a re visit of the Apple Newton.

It seems to make sense. Apple ordering flash memory, larger screens (perhaps 8-10") etc. Also this might possibly explain the two new iPhone build numbers that have been found in the iPhone 3.0 SDK.

Just a shot in the dark...

How is it interesing that a website about an old Apple product redirects to apple.com? And weren't there 4 different products, 2 of them distinctly being iPhones?

As an avid iPhone user and lover, these relentless tablet rumors wear on me. Why again would Apple cannibalize two of their markets that are doing quite well when tablet computing is a niche market at best?

No offense to the original poster, it's nothing against you. It's just the rumor that never dies.

It is interesting because the product is no longer being produced. Why would they want the domain name still? They don't maintain the domain names of any other former products, macintosh, emac, etc.

I don't know why the tablet or slate idea wears on people. I have owned both iphones, a macbook, a macbook pro, and an imac. I am by far not a newcomer to the Apple fan club. I would by an ultra portable in a heartbeat. And I think there are a LOT of other purists out there who would do the same.

As far as cannibalization, I think you are off base. An inexpensive netbook product priced at around $600 - 800 is not taking away from people interested in a MBA, MB or MBP. It is an entry point for those who aren't sure if they want to dive in feet first and throw down $1500 to get in the game. And I think if Apple can grab first time users with a product like the one that is flying around the internet rumor mills, then the sales of their other products will grow.

How many people first bought an ipod or iphone or ipod touch, and then decided than an iMac or Macbook would be a good purchase to make? I am fairly certain that an entry level product like this will be what is needed to push those that are unsure over the edge.

I also think that this ultraportable would be a great companion for a solid desktop iMac, MBP, or MB. You don't always want to grab the laptop, and you can't just grab the desktop. Talk about mobile connectivity options...this would definitely give some options that are currently not filled in the apple product line.

Maybe because newton discovered gravity by watching an apple fall...?

I think Apple is actively contacting Isaac Newton's surviving relatives with a lawsuit related to said use of apples in his studies.

LMAO thats good.

Ok here's the jist of it. The domain is over 15 years old, registered April 05 1994.
Here are a list of domains owned by apple: http://guides.macrumors.com/Unused_Apple_Domain_Names

Take this quote (in response to the iPhone Nano rumors) for example, "we're not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That's not who we are. That's not why we're here. We'll let somebody do that, our goal is not to be the unit share leader in the phone industry. It is to build the best phone."

I think that would pretty much sum up their feelings on "netbooks" too. Apple HAS a netbook. It just happens to cost $1700 because that's what it takes to make a netbook they deem worthy of putting a glowing apple on the cover of.

In other words, apple isn't just going to make a product just to fill a pricepoint.

Interesting. I guess the cheap-o macbook is their netbook. What is it, like $1000?

I'm thinking this next iteration of iPhone is going to be powerful enough to serve netbook duties for a large percentage of the market.
