My point is it only DID with extra software installed, rather than by default when docked

It was called Motorola Phone Tools and it was a pretty good program. You could type and send SMS, sync your outlook, and edit and add ring tones and videos to your phone. I still use it to edit .mp3 files to make ringtones on my iPhone.

I had this exact same idea, I had the idea why do I always have to undock my phone when I get a call or a text message? just let me do it through the computer!!!

I would like this also. That's why i don't do as much posting on the EIC when i'm away from the computer. Its just so much easier to use a "life-sized" keyboard. NOW if i could get a touchscreen lifesized keyboard that would be pretty cool. and the bumps could still be there for the home keys. this wouldn't have anything to do with the iphone, just that now i've been spoiled by the touch screen lol.
